You booked the session. Now the questions start: what do I wear, what if I look awkward, what actually happens for those two hours? Every client walks in with some version of that nervousness, and it almost always fades within the first ten minutes once the camera starts feeling normal instead of foreign.
This guide tells you exactly what to expect at a brand photography session: how to prepare, what to wear, what happens on the day, and how to make sure you get the most usable images possible from your time and investment.
"We can usually tell within the first five minutes whether a client made a shot list. It shows up in the final gallery every time."
Before the Shoot: How to Prepare
Define Your Shot List
Work with your photographer ahead of time to create a shot list: a documented list of the specific photos you need and where you plan to use them. Website hero image? LinkedIn profile photo? Instagram content? Product detail shots? Each use case has different compositional requirements. A good photographer will help you build this list, but come with a starting point based on where your gaps are right now.
Choose Your Outfits Intentionally
Solid colors photograph better than busy patterns. Clothes that fit well and feel like "you at your best" photograph better than clothes that feel like a costume. Avoid logo-heavy clothing, very bright whites (they blow out in light), and neon colors (they cast color onto your skin). Bring 2–3 outfit options to the shoot — changing between looks gives you more versatility in the final gallery. If your brand has a color palette, wearing something in or adjacent to those colors creates visual cohesion across your photos and website.
Scout and Confirm Your Location
Whether you're shooting at your studio, a coffee shop, outdoors, or a rented space, confirm the location details in advance. Check: natural light availability and timing, parking and accessibility, whether you need permission or a permit (especially in Portland parks or certain commercial spaces), and whether the location's aesthetic matches your brand. Portland has fantastic locations for brand shoots — from the Pearl District's industrial architecture to the greenery of Forest Park to clean studio spaces in NE.
Get a Good Night's Sleep
This sounds obvious, but it matters. Tired eyes, dull skin, and low energy all show up on camera in ways that no amount of editing fully corrects. Schedule your shoot for a time when you're naturally at your best — not immediately after a packed client day or a late night.
On the Day: What Actually Happens
Most 2–3 hour brand sessions follow a similar arc. The first 15–20 minutes are almost always awkward — that's normal and expected. Your photographer will warm you up with easy, low-stakes shots while you settle into the environment and get used to the camera. By the 30-minute mark, most clients have forgotten they're being photographed. The best images almost always come from the middle and end of the session, not the beginning.
A good photographer will direct you throughout: where to stand, how to position your hands, when to look at the camera vs. away, how to create movement that feels natural rather than posed. You don't need to know how to pose — that's their job. Your job is to show up, stay present, and trust the process.
What to Bring
Beyond your outfits, bring any props that authentically represent your work: your laptop, tools of your trade, products you make or sell, a notebook, coffee — whatever makes sense in the context of your business. Authentic props make shots feel more real and give your photographer more to work with. Avoid generic props that don't connect to your specific brand or work.
After the Shoot: Turnaround and Usage
Most photographers deliver a curated gallery of edited images within 1–3 weeks. You'll typically receive high-resolution files (for print) and web-optimized files (for digital use). Once you have your gallery, don't let it sit unused — update your website hero, your LinkedIn profile, your Google Business Profile, and your Instagram immediately. The ROI on professional photography compounds the more consistently you use it. When your photos are ready, pairing them with a refreshed website and updated brand guidelines creates a complete, cohesive first impression — the kind that converts visitors into clients before they even read a word of your copy.
