Thirty years of roots.
Finally online.

Desert Roots Nursery had been a Scottsdale institution since 1993. When the founders decided it was time to retire, they faced a harder question than most: how do you sell something you've spent thirty years caring for, and make sure it goes to the right person? The answer started with making the business look the way it actually was.

The Business

Desert Roots Nursery had been a fixture in Scottsdale since 1993. What started as a small operation out of a family property had grown over three decades into a beloved local destination — the kind of place where regulars knew the owners by name and came back every season without needing to be reminded.

The plants were exceptional. The knowledge behind the counter was deep. And for thirty years, that was more than enough. Business came through word of mouth, repeat customers, and the simple fact that people who drove past and stopped in almost always left with something.

But the founders were ready to retire. And that's when the real question surfaced: how do you sell a business like this to the right person? Not a developer. Not a chain. Not someone who would look at thirty years of careful cultivation and see only a property transaction. They wanted someone who would carry it forward — who would understand what had been built and actually care about protecting it.

The problem was that none of what made Desert Roots special was visible from the outside. There was no website, no Google presence, no way for a prospective buyer — or a new customer — to understand what they were looking at. Payments ran through an older card terminal disconnected from any reporting. The books were still done by hand. The business was real, but it didn't look that way on paper.

Before they could find the right buyer, they needed to show the business for what it actually was.

"We didn't want to just sell to whoever showed up. We wanted someone who'd walk in here and understand immediately what this place meant. But first, they had to be able to find us."

Before We Touched a Camera, We Listened to the Plants

We came into this project knowing web design, brand systems, and technology integrations. We knew nothing about desert horticulture. And that gap mattered.

On our first morning in Scottsdale, before any planning conversations, before we opened a laptop, the owners walked us through the entire nursery. Not a quick tour — a real education. They showed us why a saguaro cactus can take 75 years to grow its first arm, and why that patience is the whole point. They explained the difference between a prickly pear and a cholla in a way that made both feel like characters, not plants. They talked about the Sonoran Desert's monsoon season and which plants wake up because of it. They told us which specimens had been in their care for over a decade.

By the time we picked up a camera, we weren't photographing inventory. We were photographing living things with histories. That understanding showed up in every frame — in the patience of the shots, the angles we chose, the way light hit the texture of a mature barrel cactus versus a young one just starting out. When you know what you're looking at, you can't help but photograph it differently.

That morning wasn't in the project scope. It was a gift. And the photos we made because of it became the foundation for everything else we built.

What Needed to Change

Once we understood the business, the gaps became clear. Discovery was broken — someone searching "native plant nursery Scottsdale" would never find Desert Roots because there was nothing for Google to surface. No website, no profile, no content. The nursery was effectively invisible to anyone who didn't already know it existed.

Payment processing was functional but disconnected. Transactions happened, but nothing tied together — no integrated reporting, no digital receipts, no way to understand which plants sold fastest or which seasons drove the most revenue. The owners were carrying that knowledge in their heads, and that wasn't a system that could transfer to the next generation.

And customer questions — about plant care, about what would survive in a specific yard, about which plants needed full sun versus shade — came in constantly. By phone, in person, sometimes by email to an address that took days to get a response. There was no way to scale that knowledge without more hours in the day, and more hours in the day wasn't something the family had.

The Results

The website launched on a Thursday. The first online order came through 48 hours later — a Scottsdale homeowner who found them through Google, browsed the catalog from her phone, and drove over the next morning to pick up three agave plants she'd selected the night before. She'd lived four miles away for six years and had never heard of Desert Roots.

Within 90 days, foot traffic from new customers had tripled. Not because anything about the nursery had changed — the plants, the expertise, the family behind the counter were all exactly the same. What changed was that the people who would have loved it could finally find it.

The AI chatbot became its own quiet success story. More than 200 plant care conversations per month, handled automatically. Questions about watering schedules, frost protection, transplanting timing — the kind of knowledge the owners had always given away freely in person, now available at midnight to someone planning their backyard renovation. Complex inquiries got routed directly to the family. Simple ones got answered instantly.

And the sale? It happened the way the founders had hoped. A prospective buyer found Desert Roots through the new website, spent time reading through the blog, browsed the plant catalog, and reached out through the contact form. They came in for a visit, and the owners knew within the first hour that they'd found their person — someone who already understood what the nursery was before they even walked through the door, because the website had told them.

The founders put it this way: "We didn't change the business. We just stopped keeping it a secret. And the right person found us because of it."

"Before they ever opened a laptop, they asked us to walk them through the nursery. We spent the whole first morning out there — explaining the plants, the seasons, what thirty years of doing this actually looks like. You can see it in the photos. They didn't shoot our inventory. They shot our life's work. We found the right buyer because of what they built. Someone who understood what this place was before they even came to see it."
